Artist 3 - Barney Bubbles

I picked these two images of Barney Bubbles work , because they are very strong images that speak volumes , i also picked it because one is simple , yet speaks a lot and the other one is complex looking yet means simple,
He designs records sleeves which is what the 1st one symbolises , with the record players.
A load of his works have meaning and speak through their designs.
in his designs for the record sleeves you really get to see what works and how he portrays the music lyrics etc into the design to make it come to life in the image .

He has about 90 sleeve covers which he designed .

the three at the top are all different but yet they speak the same , and show the music style through the drawing .

I picked this artist because i like music anyway so the designs drew my attention and seen as my mum has loads of records i do notice certain styles and that is why i was attracted to the designs of this artist .

Artist 2 - Olly Moss

Olly Moss , is an english designer , graphic designer and illustrator , each image shows another meaning in it , its like the illustration is illiterate yet hidden , like the one on the top left hand corner , which is a seesaw , the use the saw and make it into a sea was well the show this by having a boat on it , i really thought it was cleverly done , the other one is just above , which is like a t but had patterns relating to the message they are trying to get across inside , because i am doing typography i noticed the style .
The one that looks like a toothbrush was was really interesting , it was called the Chicago sleepover , its represents this in the toothbrush image , by the brush bit being in shape of Chicago city and the the toothbrush itself representing the sleepover bit , all his posters are cleverly thought and planned out .

I picked this Artist because i liked the idea of the double meaning art , you see one thing yet it means something else , like little designs rolled into one , this artist is very fascinating .

Artist 1 - Josef Müller-Brockmann

I have been looking a lot at this artists work and it seems like he has a typography style coming out in his work
He uses words to speak the things the images cant and he integrates the words with the images .

This has the typical typography style ,
He was a swiss Graphic Designer and teacher . He studied Architecture. Design , and history or art

From what i have learnt about Josephs work is that his typography is not just that he uses Grids from his architectural designs to act as a support for the typography work , so that they can take shape from that , its a very clever way of doing things .

This is another example , at first i thought that there was no connection between architecture and typography then i realised that indeed there is quite a lot of connection between them , it was really interesting to find out .

As a student that is studying typography you need to be in tune with quite a lot of architecture plans so that the words can balance on it using the grids as a crutch as it were

Identity

Identity is how we are defined a lot in society both through the media and in everyday life , things like Gender , race sexuality and authorship .
One things in all of this that i did find interesting was feminism and how throughout the ages it has changed and became more better , when you look at how things used to be women , at home in the kitchen and raising kids while the guys went out to work and earned and if by some miracle a women would work they would not earn anywhere near the right amount and anywhere near near what men earn .
In one of the lectures we watched ,a film made in Dagenham , which showed the battle that one of the man characters ( rita ) went through to get women rights equal to men , throughout the story you see her life , from being the family stay at home mum and wife and working for little money to , making a real difference and being the voice for women everywhere , it was really inspiring .
Even race is such an issue in todays society , people still discriminate others based on there race , religion , and i feel like no matter how hard we try there will still be narrow minded people that have to brand people , according to appearance and all we can do is try and be better then that , making a difference can be done , it just takes more then just one person .

What is Modernism ?

I found this image interesting mainly because of the typographic style , but they used this style as a revolution against the classical Tradition ,

i went to the V&A and went to the modernism section , and there was a load of chairs , different styles .

I see these buildings associated with Modernism quite a lot because they have that modern finish to it , and is after The war .

The point of modernism is it is after the war , London used to look like a mess before they rebuilt it , to create modernism , everything done after the war is modernism .
and the Bauhaus is a prime example as it has the latest style and creates a modern style .

The above shot shows the building before the war being destroyed , and through this is when new building get made and London gets transformed to a modern better place ,

The above Image is what the bus stop sign used to look like .

All in all from what i have learnt about Modernism is it all about improvements that were made after the War

semiotics

Semiotics is a broad subject , connotation , and denotation are the main ones that i have related too a lot , throughout the years , mainly as i did media and we used to discuss it a lot .Denotation being the physical appearance of an image or a scene , and basically whatever you see , and the connotation  will be the detail and meaning behind it , semiotics is all about the look and how one little thing ca change the whole meaning , like one example from lecture , if you have a paperclip it could be anyones , but as soon as you add some decoration to it , it becomes personalised , someone else's , and it can make all the different .
Even if there is an image with some different language wording , the writing makes all the difference , because it may say something about the image that can change your whole point of view ,
Example : colour red .... if you have like a knife , on it , the colour automatically becomes blood and murder or if you have a heart in the red colour , the colour means passion and love , one thing , one image one sentence and change the whole meaning of something , that Semiotics .
